Personality: When she was young, Nova was one of the happiest children that she knew. Although her situation was very different from most young girls her age, she was happy. She lived with the three people she loved the most, her mother and her two grandparents, and people were kind to her. What else could you ask for?
Nova has always been book smart. She was the type of child who hated to get below a ninety for a grade on her report card. Her mother had very high expectations of her, but her expectations of herself were even higher. She would always ridicule herself if she did something wrong. At times, she would get so hard on herself that it took the words of other people to get her to stop.
When Nova’s mother got engaged to her stepfather and her grandfather died, her happy lifestyle faded. Although she could still find things to be happy about, those things seemed to be steadily disappearing. She spent more of her time being serious then laughing, which was something she never used to do.
A lot of her time when she first moved in with her father was spent trying to get his attention. It seemed as if her high grades in school were not enough to do so. During her rebellious stage, it seemed as if she was a completely different person. The happy child that she used to be faded, and in it’s place was an unruly, wild young girl with no good sense of right and wrong. She stopped thinking before she did things, and started acting on impulse. She never thought before she said or did anything, and it got her into a lot of trouble, both at school and home.
That wild side of Nova never fully went away. Although she went back to her studious, happy self when she went to the Institute, she would find herself missing the days when she would constantly drink and party. She never stopped her habits of drinking and smoking, and she goes to parties whenever she hears of one. She continued to speak her mind, no matter how rude she was being. In a sense, the girl that she was never came back.
Background: Throughout her whole life, Nova has dreamed of living in the stereotypical, happy, American family. One were the father would return home from work, kiss his wife and his two little blonde haired, blue eyed children and sit at the table while the mother served meatloaf and mashed potatoes. Like on 'Leave it to Beaver'; The perfect life. Of course, her life was anything but perfect.
In the summer of 1991, Alyssa-Nova Walton was the first child born to unmarried parents Genna Walton and Jared Pacifico. At the time of birth, Genna was 17 and Jared was 18. Jared and Genna had only met a few weeks before; Their relationship had been nothing more then a one night stand.
Genna's pregnancy took everyone by surprise, Jared most of all. He had never planned to have children at all, let alone so soon. When it happened, he got scared. He and Genna got together during her sophomore and his junior year in high school. Jared was off to college, but he promised that he would be there as much as he could during the pregnancy and look after his child after it, but he never did. He went back on tour with his band, and, even during and after Nova’s birth, he was never there.
For the first few years of her life, Nova lived with her mother and her mother's parents. She was quite a happy child, despite the fact that there was never a father in the picture. She did, however, know who her father was. Her mom had always showed her pictures of him, just so she would know the man that she looked like. Nova got used to living with her mother's miscellaneous different boyfriends, and never really minded that she did not have a daddy like normal girls and boys did. As she got older, though, things really started to get hard.
When Nova was ten years old, her mother got engaged to a man named Mark Coakley. To put it lightly, Mark did not like her. He hated the fact that his fiancé had a life before him, and that the consequences of that former life would stay with them no matter how long ago it was. Even at an age as young as ten, she would recognize her stepfather's disdain towards her. However, she tried hard to ignore it so her mother could be happy.
Less then a year after Genna’s engagement to Mark, her father, her grandfather, passed away suddenly, leaving his family with broken hearts and many debts. Her life was more stressful then it ever had been before, with her mother’s rapidly approaching wedding and the sudden death of the man that acted as her father figure. It didn’t help that her mother’s fiancé looked for every chance to ship her across the country, as long as it was not with them. As much as Nova loved her mother, she decided it was time for a bit of a father-daughter reunion.
Since leaving his former girlfriend and his first child, Jared moved to Boston, Massachusetts. It was there that he met his future wife, Caitlin, and had two other children. During his many years in Boston, he had never bothered to contact his first born or her mother, and he was quite content with his life. When Nova called him, he was more then surprised. However, he welcomed his first born with open arms.
When Nova arrived in Boston, she was shocked to see how much her father’s life had changed. Not only was he married, but he had two other children, a seven year old son named Michael, and a five year old daughter named Isabel. Nova felt betrayed; Not only had he not even attempted to make any sort of contact with his first born, but he created a completely new life. In her eyes, it was as if she was not important to him at all.
As the years went by, Nova spent a lot of her time trying to get her father to notice her. She took guitar lessons, to try to prove that she and her father had something in common. Although it did not change the way her father looked at her, she was happy to find something she loved. To her father, his family was like a perfect white tablecloth, and she was nothing but a big, nasty stain. She could tell that her stepmother did not like her, and she returned the feeling. Caitlin was a complete snob, and Isabel and Michael were the most demonic children that Nova had ever met. It seemed like Caitlin would go out of her way to make her father pay more attention to her children the his first born, and, much to her dismay, it worked.
When Nova got into her teenage years, she finally discovered a way to make her father pay attention to her: By getting into trouble. She started doing things that she had absolutely no interest in before. She got into high school parties and tried drinking, only to be brought home by the police on more then one occasion. Although this was negative attention, it was attention nevertheless.
Finally, her father couldn’t take it any longer. He contemplated sending Nova back to her mother, but he knew that there was no way possible that Genna could support their daughter. Instead, he sent her to Watson Academy in Miami, far away from Boston, where hopefully someone else could get her back on the right track. There, not only was she completely out of his hair, but he knew that she was getting a good education, and that was all he really cared about.
