Lacey white snowflakes danced down from the light blue sky, as a rather large bus pulled up to the Cozy Cabin Lodge, located in upstate Colorado. “Excuse me, no throwing papers please. Everyone! Attention! We have arrived at Cozy Cabin Lodge. You may start to file out, one by one. Thanks for being so... uh, well behaved.” The bus driver announced over the broadcasting system. In no more time then two seconds, everyone stood and tried to push through one another. So much for filing out one by one and being orderly.
Chase Hill looked around his surroundings, as the bitter snow started to cover his navy blue jacket and gloves. The Lodge looked rather large, not what he was expecting at all for the class trip to Colorado. Chase imagined they’d be staying at a beat-up motel, ten minutes away from the local skiing joint. But instead, Watson would be staying at a five star hotel only five minutes from the nearest skiing slope. Now Chase knew he would be in heaven for the following week and a half. Chase wondered over to the bus, to retrieve two maroon suitcases and skis. When he had found his bag and skis, he trailed behind a group of giggly freshman girls, obviously way too excited for a weekend away from Florida. Hopefully they would settle down by dinner tonight. Chase hated girls who laughed at everything, funny or not.
The snow continued to coat the ground, as Jared Platt emerged from the bus. He was the last person left on the bus. His friends decided it would be “cool” to let him sleep, and not wake him up when they arrived at Cozy Cabin Lodge. But the thing was, Jared didn’t really want to go to the Lodge at all. In fact, the boy hated snow. Every single part of it. The fact that you could easily slip on it and break your neck and die was not comforting towards Jared. Also, because snow was cold , wet and unbelievably disgusting after cars had driven over it. Black snow was not happy snow. And to Jared, no white stuff on the ground meant happy Jared. Growing up in New York City, Jared was used to the white crap that covered the roads and building tops. But after moving to Miami, Jared decided he enjoyed sunshine a lot better. Jared sighed when he saw all the snow already on the ground. At least it was still white. Black snow made him want to cry. Well not really, but you get the point, right? Jared noticed that both of his suitcases were no longer at the bottom of the bus. His friend, Will Maddox, must of grabbed them for him while Jared was catching some Z’s. He knew that Will was probably freaking out, being in a big crowd and all. Jared knew that Will absolutely hated large amounts of people. Will and Jared were best friends. They knew just about everything about each other. “Over here, Platt!” A familiar voice yelled over the crowd. It was Will, of course. “Oh hey, you have my stuff, good.” Jared replied, after he walked over to his friend. “The guy in charge, with the gray hair, Dwight I guess, is taking us to our rooms in about five minutes. Or maybe Ms. Voss is. I wasn't listening” Will informed Jared. “The lines moving.” He replied, quickly grabbing his suitcase and running to catch up with the end of the line. “And okay, just so I’m out of this nasty weather.” Jared said, miserably. Not even five minutes out in the cold, and Jared was complaining.
Dakota Woods glanced around the area where she stood, right next to the steps, which led up to the front entrance. The girl was almost alone, with only the nerdy boy, Taylor, from her math class. Her boyfriend, Alex, had bailed out on the trip to Colorado only three days ago. Apparently he was coming down with the stomach flu, but Dakota knew that was a lie. Why would Alex desire traveling to Colorado with his girlfriend then stay in same old Miami for Winter break? None of Alex’s friends were tagging along on the trip anyways. Dakota took a long sigh. She could see her breath, for it had to be below 20 degrees out. Dakota hated cold weather already. All Dakota wanted was to curl up in a ball, and fall asleep on her bed, at home. Not in Aspen, Colorado. The girl had heard that Mariah Carey spent her winter breaks in the mountains around here. Maybe she could get an autograph or something. But what were the chances of her showing up at Cozy Cabin Lodge? Very, very slim.
“Does anyone know if there’s a piano or something around here?” Addison Donavan asked eagerly, to anyone who would listen. The girl was practically dieing. She hadn’t touched those fine, black and white keys since the day before last. Finally a man with salt and pepper hair answered her question with a sharp, “Yes.” His name tag read ‘Dwight, Manager’. She nodded happily, with a pleased smile upon her face. The guy, Dwight, handed her the berry red suitcase that belonged to her. “Is this yours?” Dwight asked, with a blank expression painted on his pale face. “Yeah... How did you know?” Addie asked suspiciously, crossing her arms across her chest. ”Because this suitcase is the only one left. Everyone else expect you has theirs. Maybe you should have been more worried about your personal belonging then if there was a piano in the Lodge.” Dwight replied. Clearly he was a little bit more then miserable. Addie clenched the suitcases’ handle and walked away, following the mass of students in front of her. She didn’t want to deal with an old, sour man for eleven days. No way, no how.

“May I have your attention, everyone!” A female voice yelled too loud into the microphone, causing the microphone to screech, and the crowd of teenagers to cover their ears and boo. “Settle down. If juniors and seniors can report to the left of the doors, in the Aspen Falls meeting hall and sophomores and freshmen report to the right, in the Skiers Cottage meeting room. Thank you.” The feminine voice was Ms. Voss, the vice principal of Watson. Chase started up the stairs, and into the room he was suppose to meet in. He noticed a familiar face. He believed her name was Dakota Woods, or something. “Dakota?” He called out, amongst the crowd who was talking loudly and carrying on. “Yes?” She answered, a bit confused about who was calling her name. She looked to her left and saw Chase Hill, standing with his suitcase. Kota grinned, very happy that someone noticed her and actually wanted to talk to her. “Hey!” She said to Chase, “It’s pretty much freezing outside. I want Miami back!” Dakota complained, placing her two bags next to Chase’s. “Agreed!” Chase laughed, looking around the meeting place. Only about twenty seniors and thirty juniors came on the trip. All the rest were either with their families or stayed in Florida. “Oh look, isn’t that Addie Donavan?” Dakota asked, peering over Chase’s shoulder. “Oh, and there’s that Jared kid and his best friend Will!” She said, cheerfully. She hadn’t expected any of the three to come. But she was glad that all three had. “Yeah, I guess. I don’t really know.” Chase shrugged, following Kota who already took off, to catch up with Jared and friends.
Addie, Jared and Will were already standing near each other, when Dakota and Chase arrived. Somehow Dakota forget to grab her bags, so Chase was carrying four suitcases and a pair of skis. “Let me help you...” Addie’s innocent voice said, grabbing two of Dakota’s bags away from Chase. “Thanks.” He half laughed, as Addie lifted about thirty five pounds out of his hands. “Not a problem, anytime, really.” Addison grinned, her eyes twinkling. Dakota huffed, “Oops, sorry Chase. I already forgot about my bags…” She shook her head and replied to her own statement, “I can be so forgetful sometimes!” Jared and Will both chuckled at the blonde, who was rather cute and oddly likeable. “Too bad Alex and her have a little thing going on…” Will whispered to Jared. “Yeah, but I heard things aren’t going so well between them. Like they’re on rocky ground or whatever.” Jared replied back. He knew it was impolite to whisper in front of people, but he honestly didn’t care.
“Seniors, juniors. It’s Ms. Voss. Please pay attention. I will be reciting the list of where you will be staying for the next week and a half. Dakota Woods and Addison Donavan, you will be on floor 7, room 702. Jared Platt and Will Maddox, you will be on floor 7 as well, room 704. Chase Hill and Taylor Walsh, you will be on floor 7, room 706. Those six, please report to those rooms. Thank you..” The vice principals voice trailed off, and the group of six started off into the main entrance hallway. “Where’s the elevator?” Taylor asked, pushing his wire rimmed glasses further up his nose. “Over there…” Addie replied, heading towards two elevators. Addie pushed the up bottom, and it immediately lit up. The doors opened, and the six piled in. “I hope we don’t break this thing…” Will laughed, reading the sign that said the elevator can only hold 1,000 pounds. “I doubt it.” Chase replied, kind of annoyed that he had to spend his get away with Taylor. How fun could that possibly be? Dakota pushed the number 7, and they felt the elevator shake. “What the…” Will and Addie said simultaneously. The other four laughed at the two, while the elevator remained composure, and pulled the six up. Finally, the doors slowly opened, and the six stepped out, letting a newly wed couple on the elevator. “There’s our room Chasey Basey!” Taylor yelled grabbing Chase’s arm, and pulling him to room 706. Addie busted out in laughter, along with Will. Jared was too busy sweet talking Dakota, aside of the elevator doors.
“So, this is going to be a lot of fun…” Jared grinned at Dakota. “Yeah, only because I’m here though.” She replied, obviously kidding around. Kota was not that self-centered. “Maybe.” He replied, glancing down at the floor and then back to Dakota. Dakota smiled, and grabbed her suitcases’ handles. “C’mon, let’s go put our bags in the hotel room, and then I’ll meet you out here, kay?” Dakota told him, waving goodbye at Jared. The boy nodded and grabbed his bags as well. “C’mon lover boy,” Will yelled at Jared, after Dakota had shut the door of her hotel room. “Shut up.” Jared snapped, rushing into the room. “It’s not like I’ll ever have a chance with her or anything.” He sighed, falling back onto the bed. “Yeah whatever. You told me yourself that she and Alex are on shaky ground.” Will replied, looking at his reflection in the mirror above a desk, made of Aspen pine. “I look like crap, rolled around in that black snow that you hate.” Will mumbled, as there was a knock on the door. “I’ll get it!” Jared yelled, jumping out of bed and running to the door. “Wow.” Was all Will could say. Jared was acting drastic, and it was extremely entertaining.
“Hey… Addie.” Jared said, his voice dropping when he saw who was at the door. He was hoping it would be Dakota. “I wanted to know if Will and you wanted to go walk around with me, Dakota and Chase.” She asked, cracking her knuckles. “I, actually, want to go find a piano.” She laughed at herself, and looked past Jared for Will. “You wanna come?” Will nodded in agreement. He walked out of the door, and locked arms with Addie. “Let’s go look for your piano.” He smiled, as Chase came out of the door looking severely
At last, Dakota emerged from the hotel room, dressed in a pair of ultra skinny jeans and a light periwinkle sweater. On her feet were a random pair of gray flip flops. Dakota never really understood that she would need more then just sandals and a pair of black sneakers in snow. Jared smiled when she came over to him. “Where are the rest?” She asked, looking around the hallways. All she saw was that Dwight guy from earlier, fixing a broken lamp. “They went downstairs, to look for a piano or something…” Jared replied, smiling back at Kota. “Do you want to find them, or we can walk around ourselves.” She suggested, putting her hands on her hips. “Let’s walk by ourselves, that would be more eh, fun, don’t you think?” Jared replied, starting to walk towards the elevator. “Yeah.”
The two entered through the doors, and pushed the 0, which would take them down to the main floor. “How are you and Alex doing?” Jared asked, after a few moments of awkward silence. Dakota sighed, as Jared brought up Alex’s name. “Well he was supposed to be here. I wanted to have some time together, alone, away from more then half the school’s population. AKA Ryuu. But he has the flu. Boo-hoo. He was fine the night before he told me he couldn’t come. This was four nights ago, mind you. He was out with the guys, having tons of freaking fun. God, sometimes that boy pisses me the fu*k off. But still, I love him.” She smiled dreamily, and looked out of the window. The snow was still falling. More then anything, Dakota wished to be back in Miami, the arms of Alex. That was not really the answer Jared was hoping for. Well, in the beginning it was fine. But the end was kind of rotten. “Oh, guys can be like that.” Jared replied, “I would never do that to such a pretty girl.” He grinned, glancing at Dakota. Hopefully he wouldn’t freak her out or anything. That would be awfully dreadful. But Dakota and Alex were both so cute. Together and apart. Jared wouldn’t mind being with either.
Dakota glanced uneasily at Jared. ‘Crap, crap, crap. Jared likes me. And I’m pretty much head over heels for Alex.. But Jared’s so cute and nice. But I love Alex, I really do.’ “Jared,” She started to say, “I can’t, we can’t. Don’t…” Dakota stumbled over her words. She did not want to hurt his heart, or make him hate her for the rest of their Watson life together. “Just don’t flirt with me. Alex would probably kill you anyways, if he knew. Actually, I’m pretty sure he would kill you.” Dakota said, trying to avoid eye contact. “Oh sure. He seems like the dream guy. He sticks to his words and doesn’t kiss other guys drunk or sober. Ha, okay. Maybe that’s a rumor about him kissing another guy. I’m not really sure…” Jared yelled, yet his voice was quiet. Jared was easily jealous and hurt. He hated rejection. Almost like he hated black snow, and rap music. “Don’t hate me. But I think you and Addie would go good together. You both love the piano and music. What’s not to love?” She smiled. Dakota had such a way of making Jared feel worse about him. But Jared understood her point. She did have Alex. Jared has… well no one. He sighed as Addie, Chase and Will approached them. “Hey guys!” Addie said cheerfully, fully unaware of Jared’s sadness and Dakota’s guilt. “Addie played the most beautiful song ever. What was it called?” Chase told the group, nodding his head. “Just something I made up, nothing special.” "I could never do anything like that… ever. Expect maybe on the guitar.” He winked at Addie, who kind of just blew him off., with the wink and all. “It’s almost dinner time, aren’t we suppose to report to the banquet hall?” Chase asked, a confused look upon his face. “Never say report again, or I will personally kill you. Ms. Voss says it way too many times.” Jared snapped, crossing his arms. Will glared at Jared. He knew something must of happened. “Um, me and Jared need to go get changed into something more, uh, fitting.” Will told the group. “Tootles,” Jared sneered. Clearly he was still bitter about the whole Dakota thing.
“What the hell is up with you?” Will asked, as he slammed the door to their room closed. “Just twenty minutes ago you were happy, like usual. Now you’re acting irritated and cruel.” Will told Jared, as if he did not know this before he entered the room. “Thanks for the input.” Jared replied, taking off his black shirt and pulling on another black, tight fitting tee on his body. “Well if it makes you feel any better, Addie and I didn’t hit it off to well. She and Chase were busy flirting it up the whole time we were gone.” Will sulked, also changing his shirt into a bright neon green tee. “You like Addie?” Jared asked, taken back. “Well a little bit, I guess. She’s pretty cute. But I might have been a little too sweet. She seemed pissed off when I flirted with her. But when Chase did, it was just fine and dandy.” Jared looked at his best friend. He felt bad for him. He emphasized with Will as well. “Well I was flirting with Dakota, and she was fine with it at first. And then I called her pretty, and she flipped. She’s like ‘Don’t flirt with me. I have Alex, and blah blah blah. He could kill you’” Jared laughed. He could only imagine Alex trying to beat him up. That would be a funny sight. Alex probably hit like a girl. “Wow, Alex kissed Ryuu, didn’t he?” Max had a puzzled look upon his face. “Something like that.” Jared replied, sliding off the flat bottom sneakers he had on to put the slip ons he had pulled out of his suitcase. “I mean I wouldn’t mind kissing Alex either…” Jared chuckled, visioning Alex’s bright baby blue eyes gazing into his dark eyes. Now that would make a happy Jared. “Sometimes I wonder how I can be friends with you. You’re so queer." Will asked, shaking his head back and forth.
“Wait, Will, why don’t we be gay together. We would make a very hot couple.” Jared suggested, shrugging her shoulders. “All girls screw us over, and the cute ones are taken by fags.” Will just glared at Jared, but his expression finally lighten up. “Ha, you wish because I’m so hot and shit.” Will smiled, opened the door so they could go down to dinner. “Whatever, loser.” Jared smirked, hitting Will lightly on his back.
The moral of the story is true friends will always be there for you, no matter what, they’ll stay by your side.
